Avocado Mattress

Quick Specs

  • Brand: AVOCADO MATTRESS
  • Type: Tight Top

Image Feature

HANDCRAFTED IN CALIFORNIA

Avocado mattresses are handcrafted, not mass-produced, and never require zippers or assembly. Each features distinctive needle-tufted rosettes made from soft organic wool. Our craftspeople use long steel needles to pull organic cotton ribbons through every layer, securing up to 24 tufting points - binding the comfort system without chemical adhesives. This time-honored technique enhances durability and long-term comfort. It's why an Avocado mattress feels as good in year ten as it did the night you unboxed it.

Image Feature

CERTIFIED ORGANIC, NOT JUST "NATURAL"

"Natural" is the most common word in mattress marketing - and the least regulated. No federal agency defines it. No third-party audits it. "Made with organic materials" is not much better - it can mean a single component in an otherwise conventional product. Our Green Mattress is GOTS-certified at the finished-product level - the world's leading organic textile standard, recognized by the USDA's National Organic Program, verifying the entire mattress from farm to your home. If it's not finished-product certified, it's not truly organic.

Image Feature

ORGANIC FOR ALL

The Avocado Green Mattress is designed for people of all ages, body types, and sleep positions - with no weight limit. Five comfort levels across the Green Mattress line mean there is a right fit for everyone. It's more than an organic mattress - it's a better mattress that delivers luxury comfort and verified sustainability without compromise.

Image Feature

ENTIRE MATTRESS OEKO-TEX® CERTIFIED

Our OEKO-TEX® Standard 100: Class I certification applies to the entire mattress - not just the cover or latex. Class I is the highest safety classification, originally designed for products used by babies and toddlers. Every Avocado mattress, pillow and topper meets it. No other major U.S. innerspring mattress brand holds this certification . We also publish comprehensive PFAS test results - 320 substances screened at parts-per-billion sensitivity, none detected. Full results are in our Help Center.

Image Feature

NONTOXIC SCREENED: EWG & MADE SAFE®

Our Green Mattress is EWG VERIFIED® and MADE SAFE® certified - two trusted standards that screen finished products against thousands of substances known to harm human health, including carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, and reproductive toxins. Both require full ingredient transparency. What arrives in your home has been independently evaluated as safe - not just marketed that way.

Image Feature

GREENGUARD GOLD FOR CLEAN AIR

Every Avocado mattress is Greenguard Gold Certified - tested against strict VOC limits for bedrooms and children's rooms - and independently verified as Formaldehyde-Free by UL Environment. What you breathe while you sleep matters for your sleep quality and health. We test for it.

Image Feature

QUALITY TESTED, SEAL EARNED

The Good Housekeeping Seal is earned, not purchased - backed by evaluation from the scientists and engineers at the Good Housekeeping Institute. The Avocado Green Mattress was tested for quality, performance, and durability . The Seal includes a two-year limited warranty offering a refund or replacement if the product is found defective.

Image Feature

Climate Label Certified since 2019, with a verified 48% reduction in emissions since 2021.

Image Feature

1-YEAR TRIAL

We offer one of the longest sleep trials in the industry - a full year to decide. Try our organic mattress at home according to our Trial Terms . Use a mattress protector. After 30 days, if it's not right for you, return it, less a $99 return fee and original shipping costs. Approximately 97% of all returned mattresses are donated to verified nonprofits nationwide.

Image Feature

25-YEAR WARRANTY

The Avocado Green Mattress is backed by a 25-year limited warranty against defects in material and workmanship - one of the longest in the industry, because durability is a core part of sustainability. The first ten years offer full, non-prorated protection (replacement value and shipping costs), with prorated coverage for the remaining fifteen years.

GOLS-CERTIFIED ORGANIC LATEX

Responsive, pressure-relieving, and naturally cool to the touch - our GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex delivers a buoyant feel that bounces back year after year. Sustainably harvested from rubber trees at our partner plantations in India, Guatemala, and Asia.

Image Feature

ORGANIC WOOL

Cool in summer and warm in winter, our wool is sourced from free-grazing sheep across the Himalayan foothills. It wicks moisture, regulates temperature, resists dust mites and odor, and serves as a natural flame barrier - eliminating the need for chemical flame retardants.

Image Feature

ORGANIC COTTON

The first thing your skin touches is our organic cotton cover - soft, cool, and breathable against bare skin. It's the surface you feel every night, and it's made without the synthetic pesticides that travel through conventional cotton's supply chain and into your mattress.

The only mattress in America combining GOTS finished-product organic certification with five additional independent nontoxic standards - OEKO-TEX® Standard 100: Class I, EWG Verified®, MADE SAFE®, and GREENGUARD Gold with UL® Formaldehyde-Free. Now available in 5 comfort levels - with buoyant, pressure-relieving comfort, responsive support from up to 1,379 individually wrapped coils, and natural cooling you notice from the first night. Every sleep position. Every body type.

Crafted with generous layers of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex, organic wool, and organic cotton. Choose from three of our most popular comfort levels: Medium, Firm, and Plush. Free from polyurethane foams, PLA bioplastics, chemical flame retardants, and fiberglass. Hand-tufted and assembled in our Fullerton, California, facility with domestic and imported materials. An Extra Firm Mattress , Ultra-Plush Mattress featuring Pure Talalay®, and a Vegan Mattress without wool are also available. Order two Twin XLs for a Split King.

REAL IS BETTER

From the moment you lie down, you'll feel the difference - a buoyant lift instead of a slow sink, natural bounce instead of body-shaped craters, and pressure relief that doesn't trap heat against your skin. Real materials sleep differently from synthetic foams, and the difference doesn't fade with time. Choose from Medium, Firm, or Plush on this page, with up to 5 inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex - much more than most organic mattresses offer. Or opt for our Extra Firm or Ultra Plush with up to 6 inches of Dunlop and premium Pure Talalay® latex combined. Our certified organic latex hybrid mattress has made Avocado one of the most popular and highest-rated mattresses in America.

HOW TO FIND THE BEST ORGANIC MATTRESS The Avocado Green Mattress is fully certified organic - the entire mattress, not just a single component - and independently screened nontoxic by five additional standards. It offers up to three times as much certified organic latex as competing organic brands, up to twice as many recycled steel coils arranged across seven ergonomic zones, and hand needle-tufting for quality and durability that lasts. Backed by a 1-year sleep trial and a 25-year limited warranty.
Many brands use the word "organic" to describe a single material inside an otherwise conventional product. Others offer a certified organic option alongside a lineup built with the very materials they claim to avoid. Some use "natural" - a word no federal agency defines, no third-party audits, and no certification body enforces. And some replace polyurethane foam with plant-based bioplastics and call it progress. Avocado is different. Every mattress we make - from crib to California King, from Extra Firm to Ultra-Plush - is GOTS-certified organic at the finished-product level, independently verified against six overlapping health and safety standards, and made without polyurethane foam, PLA bioplastics, chemical flame retardants, or fiberglass. No exceptions. No second line. When it comes to comfort, durability, your health, and the health of the planet, it matters.
Understanding the difference is simple. A finished-product certified organic mattress means the entire product - every material, every layer, the assembled mattress itself - has been independently verified under GOTS. A mattress described as "made with organic materials" may certify only one input, such as the cotton or latex, while the remaining components go unaudited. A "natural" mattress carries no certification requirement at all. These are three fundamentally different claims, and the gap between them is where unverified chemical inputs, synthetic additives, and unaudited supply chains live.

Note: We recently expanded the Green Mattress product line from 3 models to 5. To make it easier to understand, without using firmness ratings on a 10-point scale, we renamed the existing models to reflect how they feel rather than how they are built (Tight-top, Pillow-top, Box-top). The construction of the mattresses did not change, just their names. At the same time, based on customer feedback, we added two new models: our Extra Firm and Firm to complete the product line. Read more about Avocado's mattress firmness ratings.
Look Inside See: What's Inside an Avocado Mattress: Layer-by-Layer Construction.
GOLS-CERTIFIED ORGANIC LATEX Where most mattresses use polyurethane foam, we use GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex - made with 95% certified organic latex, the highest standard. Our Dunlop latex is sourced from co-owned farmer societies and processing facilities in India and Guatemala, as well as from sources in Asia, and is processed in GOLS-certified organic facilities operating under the USDA's National Organic Program. It is also FSC® certified, verifying responsible forestry practices at the source.
Latex configurations vary by model. The Firm uses 2 inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex (D65 / 14-19 ILD, soft) in the comfort layer. The Extra Firm shares the same 2-inch Dunlop latex comfort layer but uses a different coconut fiber configuration, delivering an even firmer feel (available on a separate page). The Medium features two layers of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex - 2 inches in the comfort layer (D65 / 14-19 ILD, soft) and 1 inch in the base (D65), totaling 3 inches. The Plush uses 5 inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex: 2 inches in the pillow-top layer (D65), 2 inches in the comfort layer (D65), and 1 inch (D65) in the base. The Ultra-Plush combines 3 inches of FSC®-certified Pure Talalay® latex (not GOLS-certified) with 3 inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex, for a total of 6 inches (available on a separate page). No chemical adhesives are used to bind the layers - every mattress is needle-tufted by hand, in up to 24 locations.
Our Dunlop and Talalay latex is independently certified to eco-INSTITUT® standards at the material level. Like every material in our mattress, our latex is also covered by the same finished-product certifications that verify the complete mattress: GOTS, OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100: Class I, EWG Verified®, MADE SAFE®, GREENGUARD Gold, and UL® Formaldehyde-Free. (GOLS License: CU863637 FSC®: FSC-C156318 eco-INSTITUT®: Dunlop 119-34212-001, Talalay 0120-34225-001).
PURE TALALAY LATEX Pure Talalay® latex is a premium upgrade available in our Ultra-Plush Mattress (sold on a separate page), offering a distinctly soft and buoyant feel. Its unique production process creates a lighter, more breathable, and exceptionally resilient latex - contouring more gently to the body than Dunlop while maintaining excellent support and pressure relief.
The open-cell structure of Pure Talalay® promotes superior airflow, helping regulate temperature throughout the night. Its natural resilience enhances spinal alignment and reduces pressure points, making it ideal for side sleepers and those who prioritize plush comfort without sacrificing support. Pure Talalay latex may include a seam, which is virtually undetectable and designed to reduce material waste.
FSC®-certified and sustainably sourced, Pure Talalay is an environmentally responsible choice. Explore the Ultra-Plush Mattress to learn more.
ORGANIC WOOL Every Avocado mattress includes a layer of pure, naturally crimped organic wool (1 ounce per square foot) beneath the organic cotton cover. Sourced from free-grazing sheep and independently certified to the Responsible Wool Standard by Textile Exchange, our wool contains no additives, synthetics, or blended materials - no rayon, no polyester, no chemical flame retardants.
Wool's complex natural structure does remarkable work: it wicks moisture, regulates temperature in both warm and cool conditions, resists odor, and acts as an all-natural fire barrier that meets federal flammability standards without chemical treatments. Its natural crimp provides bounce, body, and soft support. In the Ultra-Plush, wool works in concert with silk and mohair to create a multi-fiber luxury comfort system - each fiber contributing a distinct performance characteristic that synthetic materials cannot replicate.
Our wool is certified organic as part of the finished mattress's GOTS certification, which verifies every material from farm to final product. (GOTS License: CU863637) Vegan? Explore our Avocado Vegan Mattress.
ORGANIC COTTON Our mattress cover is made from organic cotton in a soft, natural color, blended with 3% elastane for functional stretch required for tufting and enhanced durability, and is fully compliant with GOTS standards. Responsibly and ethically sourced from India, this fabric is quilted over generous layers of organic wool, silk, and mohair - creating the visibly plush, inviting surface that distinguishes the Ultra-Plush from every other mattress in our line. A thin, non-woven backing layer prevents natural fibers from shifting or working through the outer cotton over time. This backing meets GOTS accessory requirements. Reinforced edge seams are double-stitched for added durability, and four heavy-duty upholstered handles make the mattress easy to rotate or move. (GOTS License: CU863637).
INNERSPRING SUPPORT SYSTEMS Our patent-pending innerspring system features between 833 (Twin) and 1,379 (King) individually wrapped steel coils arranged across seven strategic zones to support hips, back, and shoulders - with a reinforced steel perimeter for consistent edge-to-edge support throughout the life of the mattress.
For our Medium, Plush, and Ultra Plush, three wire gauges are placed with purpose: 16-gauge (narrow diameter) perimeter coils reinforce the sides and header/footer zones; 15-gauge coils run through the center third; and 14-gauge (larger diameter) coils flank both sides of the center section, supporting the shoulder and hip areas equally, because our mattresses are designed to be rotated regularly. Our Firm uses an 8-inch coil unit, with three wire gauges and up to 1,337 individually wrapped coils arranged across seven ergonomic zones. Our Extra Firm uses two 3-inch coil units (14-gauge) separated by an organic-latex-infused coconut pad, resting on an organic hemp fiber pad, for maximum support.
Each coil floats independently within food-grade, non-woven polypropylene fabric to improve airflow, support, and spinal alignment. Coils are heat-treated and stress-relieved, manufactured by Avocado from recycled steel wire, and assembled using an environmentally conscious adhesive composed of tested components (Waxes: CAS 8002-74-2, Resin: CAS 8050-26-8, Antioxidant: CAS 6683-19-8, EVA Polymer: CAS 24937-78-8).
Like every component in our mattress, the innerspring units are included in our finished-product certifications: GOTS, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100: Class I, EWG Verified®, MADE SAFE®, GREENGUARD Gold, and UL Formaldehyde-Free - ensuring it adheres to the highest safety and environmental benchmarks.
NEEDLE-TUFTED BY HAND Most mattresses bond their comfort layers together with chemical adhesives: a faster, cheaper process that introduces synthetic compounds into the layers closest to where you sleep. We don't use adhesives to keep everything together. Instead, every Green Mattress is needle-tufted by hand at our Fullerton, California, facility: a long needle drives a fabric ribbon through the full depth of the mattress and caps each end with a soft wool rosette, mechanically anchoring every layer in place. The result is a mattress that retains its shape, support, and material integrity over time - no off-gassing from bonding agents, no bonds that weaken with nightly use. It's one of the most labor-intensive bedmaking methods and a hallmark of quality.
ADJUSTABLE BASE READY Our Eco Adjustable Base and the Eco Plus Adjustable Base provide various features to support your body as it eases into sleep. Six massage settings relieve aches and pains, an anti-snore position reduces unwanted log-sawing, and a zero-gravity mode reduces body tension. The Eco Plus adds upper and lower body lumbar adjustment, seat extension, and a deck-on-deck design that hides under-the-base mechanics.
NO FLAME RETARDANTS No flame retardants are used. The Avocado Green Mattress uses only GOTS-certified organic wool, which is naturally fire-resistant. Our organic wool has also been tested for harmful substances and meets OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 (24.HUS.86422). View Our Open Flame Test Results.
Tested for PFAS PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of man-made chemicals used in various industries worldwide. Known for their persistence in the environment and in the human body, they are often referred to as "forever chemicals." At Avocado, we're committed to ensuring our products are free from harmful levels of PFAS. Our mattresses have been rigorously tested using advanced techniques such as Liquid Chromatographic/Tandem Mass Spectrometer (LC/MS/MS) analysis and Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis for 320 PFAS substances. This testing method is superior to generic organic fluorine screening tests, which can often be inaccurate and fail to detect specific PFAS compounds. Test results indicate that our mattress materials contain no detectable amounts of PFAS. Read our PFAS test results.
Climate Label Certified The Climate Label is a trusted mark of corporate climate leadership. Companies that earn the Climate Label have been verified as meeting high standards for climate performance, transparency, and accountability. Legal Label A law label is a legally required tag describing interior filling materials. Few companies share this before purchase. We believe differently. All Avocado Green Mattress models are assembled in Fullerton, California, with domestic and imported materials consisting of natural latex foam rubber pad, natural wool fiber, and a coil spring unit, plus a fabric cover of organic cotton (97%) and elastane (3%), which provides stretch and recovery in the knit cover. Our Extra Firm model uses two coil units plus latex-infused cocofiber pads. No polyurethane foams, memory foams, chemical adhesives between comfort layers, or chemical flame retardants are used. Specific percentages vary by model. Read Our Law Labels.
GOOD HOUSEKEEPING LIMITED WARRANTY\u2028 If any product that bears the Good Housekeeping Limited Warranty Seal proves to be defective within two years from the date it was first sold to a consumer by an authorized retailer, Good Housekeeping will refund the purchase price or $2,000, whichever is less, or, at Good Housekeeping s sole discretion, repair or replace the product.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Is the Avocado Green Mattress really organic?
Yes. Every Avocado Green Mattress is GOTS-certified organic at the finished-product level - meaning the entire mattress, not a single material, is independently verified from farm through manufacturing. GOTS is recognized by the USDA's National Organic Program and is the world's leading organic textile standard.
What is the difference between a finished-product certified organic mattress and one "made with organic materials"?
A mattress marketed as "made with organic materials" may certify only one component - such as the cotton or the latex - while the rest of the product uses conventional or unverified inputs. Finished-product certification under GOTS means every material, every processing stage, and the final assembled product has been independently audited against the same organic standard. It is a fundamentally different and more rigorous claim.
What certifications does the Avocado Green Mattress have?
Six independent standards verify the finished product: GOTS (organic integrity from farm through finished product), OEKO-TEX® Standard 100: Class I (harmful substance testing at the highest safety tier), EWG Verified® (full ingredient transparency and health-based screening), MADE SAFE® (screening against carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, and reproductive toxins), GREENGUARD Gold (indoor air quality and VOC emissions), and UL Formaldehyde-Free (no added formaldehyde or precursors). Additional material and supply-chain certifications include GOLS, FSC, RWS, and Fairtrade.
What is the safest nontoxic mattress?
The safest mattresses are those verified by multiple independent standards testing for different substances through different methodologies. The Avocado Green Mattress is certified against six overlapping finished-product standards - covering organic integrity, harmful substances, health hazards, indoor air quality, ingredient transparency, and formaldehyde - and has published comprehensive PFAS test results (320 substances, none detected) in our Help Center.
Does the Avocado mattress contain PFAS or "forever chemicals"?
No. We screen for 320 PFAS substances at parts-per-billion sensitivity using LC/MS/MS and GC-MS methodologies. No detectable amounts have been found across adult and crib mattresses. Full substance list, methodology, and results are published publicly in our Help Center.
Is an organic mattress better than a natural mattress?
"Natural" is unregulated - no federal agency defines it, no third-party audits it, and no certification body enforces it. A mattress made with conventionally grown cotton can be called "natural" without consequence. "Organic" under GOTS requires restricted chemical inputs, full supply-chain traceability, independent audits, and annual recertification at the finished-product level. They are not comparable claims.
How does the Avocado Green Mattress compare to other organic mattress brands?
Many brands certify a single material - such as latex or cotton - and market the product as organic. Others offer one certified organic option alongside a lineup of conventional products. Every Avocado mattress is GOTS-certified organic at the finished-product level, verified against six overlapping health and safety standards, and made without polyurethane foam, PLA bioplastics, chemical flame retardants, or fiberglass. No exceptions across any model or size.
Why do organic mattresses cost more?
Certified organic materials cost more to grow, source, and verify than conventional alternatives. Every Avocado mattress carries the cost of GOTS certification from farm through finished product, five additional independent nontoxic standards, and materials like organic latex that replace cheaper petroleum-derived foams. That investment also produces a mattress backed by a 25-year warranty - roughly 2.5 times the lifespan of a conventional hybrid. The upfront cost is higher. The cost per year of sleep is not.
Is the Avocado Green Mattress comfortable?
Available in five comfort levels - from Extra Firm to Ultra-Plush - with up to 6 inches of certified organic latex for buoyant, pressure-relieving support. Organic wool regulates temperature and wicks moisture. Steel coils in seven ergonomic zones align your spine and reduce motion transfer. Across 44,000+ verified reviews, customers rate Avocado 4.6 out of 5 stars.

Professional delivery and installation is available for every product we sell. We would be happy to coordinate delivery and installation for you.

Extended warranties are usually very inexpensive and can save you thousands in the future. It's simple and inexpensive to purchase extended warranties and one of the smartest ways to protect your investment.

Mattresses can be large, heavy and expensive. You probably don't have the special tools or expertise needed to fix them in a crisis. If you can spare a few thousand dollars without batting an eyelash for new bedding should they break tomorrow, don't buy a warranty. But if you're like most of us, protect yourself by purchasing inexpensive extended warranties when you buy a new product and save yourself big money in the long run.
