SOLID WOOD SLATS

Plywood, particle board, and composite wood - that s what the majority of bunkie boards are made of. And they re typically one piece, which keeps heat inside your mattress and can warp due to moisture and temperature changes. At Avocado, that s not how we do things. We craft our Bunkie Board with solid, American-sourced wood and a slatted design to ensure air flows efficiently between the mattress and its base for cool, deep slumber.

ORGANIC COTTON COVER

Most bunkie boards are covered with cheap synthetic fabric that tears easily, emits harmful VOCs, and doesn t breathe. What s more, the material is often bonded to the wood using chemical-based glues. We cover the solid wood slats of our Bunkie Board with an airy organic cotton cover that allows for maximum breathability. Organic cotton is held to a stricter standard than conventional cotton and is grown without pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. This is better for you, our family farmers, and the planet. And we secure the cotton cover using steel staples - no glues or other bonding adhesives.

Keep your mattress from sagging and slumping. Made to go between a mattress and its base, our low-profile Bunkie Board adds durable, sturdy support for your bed, evenly distributes body weight for better sleep, and prolongs the life of your mattress. The 1.5-inch-thick foundation features solid wood slats for optimal airflow and an organic cotton canvas cover. Perfect for trundle beds, bunk beds, day beds, and bed frames that lack proper support.

A BETTER BUNKIE BOARD

Without adequate support, mattresses sink and lump over time. Our 1.5-inch, low-profile Bunkie Board provides an essential foundation to ensure your mattress retains its shape and delivers long-lasting, body-contouring comfort. It functions like a box spring but without the added height. And unlike most bunkie boards, which are made in one piece that traps heat and prevents airflow, our design features wood slats covered with a breathable organic cotton canvas to allow air to flow easily underneath your mattress. It s a must for trundle beds, bunk beds, day beds, and wire bed frames or those whose slats are too far apart to offer appropriate reinforcement.

Slatted Design for Maximum Support & Airflow Most bunkie boards are flat pieces of particleboard or plywood intended to go between your mattress and the surface it sits on. Intentionally, our Bunkie Board is built differently. It is made of solid wood slats and wrapped in GOTS-certified cotton to provide the needed structural support while also allowing airflow. Proper circulation helps your mattress breathe naturally and sleep cool. Our Bunkie Board can be used on any type of sleep setup - on top of a box spring, foundation, platform bed, or bunk bed - anywhere where additional support for a mattress is insufficient. It can be used on top of existing slats if additional support is needed, or replace the slats system entirely. It can also be used with our Coconut Coir Mattress Pad, to reduce squeaking on an existing bed frame or to maximize airflow.
GOTS-Certified Organic Cotton We use GOTS-certified organic cotton canvas in a soft, natural color. Responsibly and ethically sourced from India, we also use this durable textile to finish our award-winning mattresses. Our organic certified cotton has been tested to ensure it contains no harmful substances.
Climate Label Certified The Climate Label is a trusted mark of corporate climate leadership. Companies that earn the Climate Label have been verified as meeting high standards for climate performance, transparency, and accountability. Products and services from certified brands are developed and delivered with a focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions over time. They have long-term climate targets backed up by immediate funding and actions.
California Residents We operate our own woodshop - in a facility completely separate from our mattress factory, in Los Angeles - which produces wood dust. Read California's required Proposition 65 warning for wood dust.
Project Zero Waste We're proud to be certified by UL Solutions for a landfill diversion rate of 85%. That means only 15% of our manufacturing waste ends up in the landfill - we upcycle or recycle the rest. Since we began Project Zero Waste in 2020, we've been a pioneer in the space, increasing our waste diversion rate by 33%. We are the first mattress and bedding company to achieve this. But we aren't done yet. Our goal is at least a 90% diversion rate. Read more about Project Zero Waste.

Extended warranties are usually very inexpensive and can save you thousands in the future. It's simple and inexpensive to purchase extended warranties and one of the smartest ways to protect your investment.

Mattresses can be large, heavy and expensive. You probably don't have the special tools or expertise needed to fix them in a crisis. If you can spare a few thousand dollars without batting an eyelash for new bedding should they break tomorrow, don't buy a warranty. But if you're like most of us, protect yourself by purchasing inexpensive extended warranties when you buy a new product and save yourself big money in the long run.
